New Service Offering - Myofascial Dry Needling!

Dry needling is a musculoskeletal procedure where a fine needle or acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscles into myofascial trigger points. The aim is to reduce pain, improve range of moment, relax tense/taut muscle tissue, and promote blood flow and oxygenation to muscles.

Myofascial Trigger Points are hyper-irritable and/or hyper-sensitive palpable nodules within taut bands of skeletal muscle.

Benefits:

  • Increase range of motion
  • Decrease tense muscle tone
  • Decrease pain in musculoskeletal tissue
  • Elicit a ‘local twitch response’ which is an involuntary reflex where the affected muscles being needled contract. This response and contraction can alter the length and tension of muscle fibres and stimulate mechanoreceptors like A-Beta fibres
  • Sustained muscle contraction of taut bands and trigger points may cause local ischemia (restriction of blood flow) and hypoxia (low oxygen level in body tissues). Dry needling causes vasodilation in small blood vessels promoting an increase in muscle blood flow and oxygenation
  • May reduce central and peripheral pain sensitisation at trigger point sites restoring homeostasis to the body tissues being treated through nervous system input
  • May promote analgesic effects between distal and proximal trigger points
